PostSubject: Rejected Joey??...Did I do the right thing?   Rejected Joey??...Did I do the right thing? Icon_minitimeTue Dec 20, 2011 6:43 am

Last Thursday I had two joeys come oop. On Friday when I came home from work I found one of the joeys on the bottom of the cage very cold. I tried everything I could following all the advice on Suz's site and others but I still lost the joey, she passed peacefully in my hands.

Over the weekend mommy did a fine job with her other joey but yesterday afternoon my daughter found the joey out of the pouch and helped her back into the pouch and mommy grabbed her right away and let her on the nipple. However, when I got home a few hours later the joey was at the top of the cage hanging on a piece of fleece. She was cold so I grabbed the pouch with mom and put baby back in hoping that mom would take care of her but mom wanted nothing to do with her. I kept mom and baby with me in the pouch for over an hour hoping that mom would let her back on the nipple but again mom was not interested in her joey at all.

I did pose a question on facebook and GC the general advice was to pull the joey. So, I did (still not sure I did the right thing though) but I had a strong feel that if I did not this little joey would have been cannibalized.

My little joey has made it through the night with hourly feedings. Some feedings she eats well and others she does not. She has been tucked inside a bra the entired time nice a cozy.

You guideance is much appeciated.

Helpful info:
- This is not their first joey however it was their first set of twins as their first joey was a single.
- Nothing has changed in their environment which may have created undo stress that I can identify
- I feed the orginal HPW diet with extra HPW powder for nursing moms
- Mom is one of the sweetest dear gliders I have but I am still working on Dad who is pouch protective but has always been very okay with me going into pouch to check on joeys and play with mom who loves to socialize.

It is with tears running down and heavy heart that I write to say my little girl just passed in my hands.

Oh Sarah. These things are so hard. It is very hard to save them before their eyes open. It is not impossible, but it is so difficult and the odds are against you from the start. You did everything right. I pray this is your only experience with this.
