Subject: Infection of the 3rd eyelid, PLEASE HELP surgery?? Thu Jan 09, 2014 8:47 pm
I need HELP!!! My vet has tried 2 antibiotics, eye drops, and it will be two weeks this tuesday. I am posting on this thread because my vet (who is a seasoned glider vet) wants to operate on Beaker and I have had seasoned embers of the glider community tell me not to. However I trust my vet and Beaker's miserable. Beaker is blind in the other eye, due to a scratch last December while he was healing from a facial abscess.
On December 31 I took him to the vet because he eye was swollen. and very blood shot. Vet said he had an infection of the third eyelid. Put him on TMP/SMZ, Flurbiprofen eye drops and meticam. We went back 7 days later, no better so he but him on a form of baytril. He goes Tuesday the 14th and if he's not better then vet wants to put him and remove part of the eyelid.
Do i pressure the vet to try something else? I am afraid if we wait too long, beaker is gonna loose his eye. My pics aren't so good, but very similar to this thread:https://thesweetspot.forumotion.net/t2286-infection-prolapsed-3rd-eyelid

Is there an abcess above or below the eye that can be causing it to swell like this? Have you shown your vet the thread that you linked here? This may give you some other options, and some other vets to consult with,

No abscess, no teeth or bone involved. All the swelling is the third eyelid ... Today I'd day 9 and no improvement, maybe worse. He's being seen again Tuesday. So I'll shown him the article and maybe have him call Dr. Tristan. I'm trying to see if anybody else has had the same thing ?

Many people have had the same thing. I have had two with infections of the same sort in the last 6 months. Sometimes they take a while to heal. By a while,I mean many weeks. I always use Convenia and Tobramyacin drops. Convenia has proven to be very effective in infections of the head and neck in gliders.

I dealt with an third-eyelid infection last April. You can see the thread below this one for the whole story. It took about 3-weeks to see significant improvement. I was doing drops every 2 to 4 hrs of one sort or another for at least 2 weeks before there was improvement.

The difference between beaker and Betty Sue is beaker cannot open his eye at all. We clean it at least 4 to 5 times a day and it barely opens.

There was a period of time the third eyelid covered the entire eye. I considered surgery to remove it for awhile, but it did start to improve after day 10 or so.

Well I can't talk directly with the doctor (hearing). Erik said the vet said he's not comfortable with trying with trying anything else because the meds he's tried are in the same family or are like metacam and will hurt his liver. I suggested things like tobramycin, ciprofloxin, etc. Before calling doctor I checked in him and he is able to keep his eye open a little between cleanings, so I think that's a good sign. He is eating and drinking, etc. It's hard when they're sick cause you always want a magic cure.

Believe me, I know! I always think the worst and think about the most aggressive treatment. These infections do seem to take awhile to respond to treatment. I tried to keep the drops going as much as possible to keep the inflammation down and keep the eyelid moist (Blink drops). My vet also was leaning towards surgery to remove it. Surgery may be the best option for Beaker - only you and your vet can make that call. I will just say that I was glad I waited before taking the surgical option. I'm hoping for the best for you and Beaker!

If you are seeing some improvement, why not just stay the course? You don't have to rush, especially when those with experience are sharing that it takes weeks to see significant improvement.
