Little Russel came to me with a facial abscess and he is also blind in the eye on that same side.

Had him vetted and treated, low and behold abscess is back.

This time they put him under, cultured it and then flushed it out. He came home on Clavamox twice a day. Today they contacted me and told me the culture came back positive for two bacterium. One that the Clavamox will take care of and E-Coli, I go to pick up a 21 day supply of antibiotics for that and another week of his current antibiotic.

Has anyone else had a glider test positive for E-Coli in an abscess?

Yes. It is not uncommon. There is a very, very wide range of bacteria found in facial abscesses. There is no one bacteria that is found most often.

E-coli has not yet proven to be one of the most difficult to treat or the most severe in terms of comorbid conditions, so that is good. Did they give you a severity number? (i.e. 1+ to 4+)

If they gave you a copy of the culture results, please be sure to share them with the SUGAR Group - and also please take time to participate in the SUGAR Group's research study on facial abscesses.

For those unfamiliar with facial abscesses, they very often recur over and over again. I have one glider who had over 30 facial abscesses during his life.

When I go to get his meds tomorrow I will get them to email me the results of the cultures.
