Do gliders carry salmonella? My licensor said I can't get approved to have them because of the risk. Do they pose any more threat than a cat, dog or guinea pig, hamster or gerbil that could carry it? Thanks, Toni

Gliders do not "carry" salmonella" in that it is not just present with gliders. However, gliders can and do contract salmonella and it is then very difficult to treat.

I'm not sure what you mean by "licensor?" If you give us a bit more information, we can maybe direct you to some information you can share with your licensor.

I am a licensed daycare provider. They won't approve sugar gliders in my home because their stance is and i quote "your variance will not be approved because of the risk of salmonella. It has been our stance that we do not issue pet variances for anything that may have a risk of spreading salmonella." What I am trying to do is educate them. Obviously no licensed day care provider in MN has asked for this because they are exotic. Dogs, cats, hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs and birds are animals that you can have in your home without needing a variance (permission) to have them. If there is any info that sugar gliders are no more risky than other pets. i could try to overturn their decision. thank you.

I don't know that that sort of information exists. As I said, gliders can and do contract salmonella, and once they get it, it is very difficult to treat and to get rid of. Speaking from experience here. I have been treating a glider for it for 8 months now and I'm still not 100% sure that he is free of it.

I know that is not much help to you. I would suggest that you ask your vet to write something up for you if he/she thinks that gliders do not pose any more of a risk than other animals. None of us are really qualified to make that sort of comparison.

I agree. It's not like they're baby turtles who are a very common carrier of Salmonella. As far as I know, they are just as susceptible to it as other non-exotics that are allowed, but I am not a vet nor a parasite expert. Definitely see if you can get your vet to write a letter. Are you in Minnesota? If so, let me know and I could direct you to a few decent glider vets around here (and one awesome one, in my opinion - mine) and you can see what their opinions are. Very Happy

Check out the list here: https://thesweetspot.forumotion.net/t38-minnesota

My vet is Dr. Baillie at Cedar Pet Clinic and he is a 45 minute drive even for me and I am just southwest of MPLS, but he is so worth it in my opinion!

A good vet is always worth the drive, IMO. Even if that drive were, like...... 6 hours one way! Salmonella 24870
