Sugar glider abscess

I own a sugar glider. She is about 5 years old and has been a mother. She has just gotten what I believe is a facial abscess. I am bringing her to the vet and I wanted to know a couple of things.

What would the vet prescribe for her?

Estimate of how much all of this will cost?

Is there anyway to reduce the swelling or keep her from loosing her eyesight? (She can not close her eye from the swelling)

I am so sorry that your girl and you are going through this. You are doing the right thing, getting her right to the vet.

Each vet is different, so I don't know that anyone here can estimate the cost for you.

My female, Poppy, had a facial abscess this past year and we were fortunate enough to have it respond to medication and it did go away (it took a while - it did not go away as quickly as it arrived!). I do know that the first thing recommended is to have an x-ray taken to see if there is indeed tooth involvement. My vet used Clavamox and Covenia. Again, each case is different and what worked for my girl may not be appropriate for your girl.

Val should also be able to give you good information on this and if I remember correctly, some of the issues that affect the eye like this are not necessarily facial abscesses but I can't for the life of me remember what it is. Not saying that's the case with your little one, just kind of thinking out loud.

Either way, it's good you're seeing the vet. They'll likely need to do x-rays, which vary in cost, depending on the vet. And until you've been there and know what's going on, it's hard to say what meds will be prescribed, though Val will be able to give you a better answer on this.

Make sure you get a C & S done. Last year, my Lan had a facial abscess and was put on a certain antibiotic and when the C & S results came back, we found that he had a staph infection resistant to the antibiotic he was on. We switched to one that it was not resistant to & it cleared up and went away completely after several weeks. Good luck!
