PostSubject: E-Collars   Fri May 28, 2010 9:54 pm

...Over a year ago a small male glider came in with an ecollar on. He was going to be here for a short period of time to get a second opinion on his health problem. His ecollar was one with snaps and I watched him trying to live with it. I watched him trying to run in the wheel...walk across the cage....climbing...eating and getting in his pouch. He would go just a little bit and the head would go down to rest. I got him out and put one of our collars on him and he was a happy little camper.

I felt like I had to do something to help other gliders who were having the same problem...I started weighing collars. Since then we have changed over to the velcro collars and I love them. I think everyone should know about the diffrent collars. These collars have the double mole skin on the neck part and single mole skin on the outside edge.

Snap collars weigh 14 grams
stapled collars weigh 4 grams
Velcro collars weigh 5 grams

The stapled collars are what we made here for years and used...the velcro collars we have changed to are collars that come from Karin Milas.

Please think about this...put the weight on your neck. How long could you handle 14 pounds around your neck 24/7. That is eating...sleeping...running...playing and all the things that your day consists of. Could you handle it...it doesn't matter if you weigh 90 pounds or a 190 pounds...I couldn't handle it. To the glider it can cause stress and effect thier whole life. Which in turn can effect thier healing...thier attitude...thier abilities and eating. It does the same thing to the glider that it would do to you...the glider doesn't understand the reason for the collar.mom or dad is being mean for some reason. Us humans WOULD understand what was going on and the reason...it wouldn't be any easier to wear it. So remember...the glider DOESNOT understand and has to deal no only with the weight...but also the reason and it's limited mobility

As I said our collars come from Karin...and if you love your baby...get your collars from her too.

Mary

I spoke with Karen via PM about the velcro e-collars after reading about Cora's experience with Spencer. Her response to me, if I recall, was that they were recommended primarily for gliders that need to be in e-collars long-term. She recommended that I stick with the snap collars for emergency use.

Sara, the snap collars are a Godsend for emergencies. Other collars, for people with little or no experience putting them on, are too hard to get on the glider. However, once the emergency passes, I agree with Mary, switch to the velcro or staple collars. The snap collars are heavy for the babies. Plus, mine all learned how to unsnap them after about 2 days, so I ended up having to tape them, too.

Does anyone have any advice on how to apply an ecollar when you are by yourself and limited to one hand? There was a member on GG tonight that I was communicating with via text message and she couldn't get an ecollar or a straw on the tail by herself. I felt helpless not being able to tell her how to do it one-handed. From the sound of it, she had to make an ecollar pretty quickly so I don't even know what she used. Communicating one handed was hard enough for her. She was securing her glider with the other hand so he wouldn't chew his tail.

I finally gave her the list of emergency contacts from the Sugar Glider Help site. I know she's very upset and I gave her all the advice I could but she said she simply couldn't do it. If someone from the list gets a call at 3 or 4 this morning, I apologize! I didn't know what else to do and I know she's pretty upset.

Burrito wrap the glider first...maybe hold the glider down with your arms so you have 2 hands? It's been so long since I've needed to use an e-collar, but I think that's what I had to do.

I don't know how I missed this, but the snap and velcro e-collars are able to be put on with one hand. Otherwise, you have to get the e-collar around the glider and then hold it in place with two hands. It is best, if you do not have a snap or velcro e-collar to wake up a friend or neighbor and get someone to help you.

When I was talking to her, it was between 2:30 and 4:00 a.m. my time. I asked her if she could wake someone up to help her and she said "no". I also don't know the full story except that she took him into the vet yesterday morning and then she posted this morning that he passed away at the vet. I'm guessing there was more than a tail issue. I wish more people would have ecollars on hand!

You and me both, Kylah.
So sorry for the loss.

You can call me any time of day or night. I might not answer the phone the first time, cause I'm hard to wake I am told, but I will answer the phone in the middle of the night for glider calls.

She said she couldn't get the e-collar on, she couldn't get a straw on, she couldn't wake anyone...anything I suggested she said she couldn't do so I gave her your number AND the list off GC for people to call in emergencies. I asked her to please call someone at least 3 times because I just didn't know how else to help and she just kept asking me what else to do over and over.

Just a quick side note so as not to get this thread off topic, but I did just read that she says he was too old to have surgery so she opted to put him to sleep instead. She never even said what was wrong that would have required surgery!
