Per our last chat topic, I thought I would provide for our members a list of treatment options for wounds as well as some experience with each. SO, if you have wound care experience, please share how you treated the wound, any issues you encountered and the results of treatment.

Also, list any treatments I have forgotten, as I am sure there are some.

We have come to a place in animal care where there are MANY different treatment options for open wounds. So, treatment is usually a matter of personal preference.

Options for debridement and/or cleaning and disinfecting:

* Sterile Saline
* Chlorhexadine
* Betadine

Options for topical treatment:

* QuickDerm
* Silvadine
* Zymox
* Malotic ointment
* Emu Oil
* Vitamin E
* Facilitator
* Neosporin/Polysporin
* Scarlet Oil
* Collasate
* Honey
* Granulex
* Trypzyme
* Vetericyn

I've been doing the same thing to Pixie that Cora does....not any smaller...but no scab and the wound it's self doesn't look like raw meat any more. It looks much smoother...and old mom here is feeling a lot better for her.

Charlie ordered some Quick derm off the net...but by the time we get it we may not need it. But...we'll have it for when we do.

It's been years since we've had a mating wound here...but all our males are neutered and have no hormones to inspire them. The last one we had here, the female did the male. She came into heat and Jaz just wasn't interested, so she went after him.

I just want to put this out there in case someone doesn't know...

Never ever EVER put hydrogen peroxide on a wound that you are trying to get to heal! It destroys granulation tissue (Young scar tissue) and actually reverses healing in some cases. I HAVE seen some wound care Dr's use it when they are trying to keep a pocket or tunnel open so it will heal from the outside in. But only on the outer edges of the wound, being sure not to get the peroxide deep into the wound.

Quickderm, Vetericyn and emu oil have been the ointments of choice here for Neala. She's had a wound now for almost a year. Half of it closed up relatively quickly once I began doing both the Quickderm and emu oil, and the other half got down to about a nickel size and then seemed to freeze. We begin laser therapy tomorrow morning so we'll see if that opens things up and helps to jump start the healing process again. Will update on how things progress.
