PostSubject: PLEASE HELP    PLEASE HELP Icon_minitimeMon Sep 13, 2010 11:10 am

I have had my glider for almost 3 years (since she was approx. 2 months old). The person I bought her from misinformed me re: diets. So recently I noticed she could not move her back legs I took her to the only hospital I knew was open at 4 AM in new york city. They told me to return at 9am and meet with their exotic specialist....I did....I met with her and she told me that she THINKS that my baby may have HLP....since she cannot move her legs she simply prescribed a calcium liquid to administer twice a day for 1 month..I have beend doing so I have completely changed her diet and am trying the leadbeaters mix now too...I dont know what else to do the only thing she can move is her right arm and her head everything else seems to be paralyzed I feel so horrible because I feel like I can't do anything...I do not know who else to turn to ..everyone says they are experienced but they just want my $$$$ which I do not mind spending as long as I get some answers..I live in Queens, NY ...
-SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME ASAP-
-THANK YOU SO MUCH-

Garias, how long has she been on the meds? The diet alone might cause the HLP, but usually there is an underlying illness that causes it. Has she been checked for any infection, UTI, or otherwise? A round of antibiotics might be in order. If you do not cure the underlying cause, you will not cure the HLP.

The calcium suppliment will help, though.

She has been on the Meds for almost a month. I defenitley think it was the diet I had her on that caused the HLP...I feel so giulty...But the guy who sold her to me informed me fruits and some veggies would do....... when i took her to the hospital or the "exotic specialist" they didnt do any blood work, they took a BOX xray--which limits the view on bones and that was it...I want to see someone who IS actually a specialist with gliders....I have had her on clavamox for a few days because she pulled out 2 nails and they were getting infected but they seem much better now...the specialist wants me to follow up with her next week which i refuse to do because she will simply weigh her and look at her and charge me a whole bunch of money having done nothing for her.....

Please followup with the vet -- they do not ask for followup visits for nothing. Followup visits can help to catch any problems that we might not recognize.

My vet never charges for follow ups. I'd call the vet's office and ask if there is a charge if you're not sure. What diet are you switching to?

If it is a severe case, it may take a while to correct. How did you end up on the clavamox, was it prescribed? I'd keep her on it for as long as they say to, or for at least two weeks.

She's been on the old diet for 3 years, so maybe it will take a bit of time. Like Davie asked, what diet is she on now?

Lead beaters- is that BML lead beaters or the original lead beaters?

With it being a month, I'd think you'd see a little stepping stone? How are you administering the calcium supplement? Could it be she's not getting the full amount? Depending on the dose, they may want to increase the amount. These are things that are usually looked at and discussed on a follow up- to check for progress or to see if an alternative route should be taken. A calcium injection may be something to consider also.

What kinds of vegetables are you offering? Offering dark green veggies is a great source of calcium as well. Kale & mustard greens are packed with calcium- you'll have to blend them up to a relish/baby food consistency with other veggies, most won't eat them any other way. Papaya is also high in calcium.

We're glad to have you her, Giovanna. Val is in Texas, so she's an hour behind our time. I know she just got home a bit ago and she'll probably be online at some point, but you should be fine to call her at 10pm our time.
