| This is my Stormy. She is a 9 yr old Female who aparently had some eye problems while I was gone. The red around the outside of the eye seems to be from her scratching it. I am sorry that it is a little blurry. She is in a mood tonight. We went to the Vet today. She sent three meds home with me. 1. Cipro drops - for the eye 2. Metacam - oral 3. Soother plus ointment - I've never heard of this one, but the Vet says they have been using it and it seems promising to encourage healing. I also talked to her about this whole cage. There are three in this cage and they all have been loosing weight. So she took a swab of the eye to be sent off to an exotic vet in Maitland for a culture and sensitivity . She hopes this will get us a head start on what is going on with this cage. Maybe there is an infection or fungus or something that they could be passing to each other. If that doesn't tell us what is happening with the cage, it should at least let us know what kind of crud is going on with Stormy's eye. She also gave me the address and Website of the Exotic Vet in Maitland and has already talked to them so that I can go there if this flairs over the weekend or late at night. I asked the Vet about oral antibiotics and she said that oral antibiotics don't have much affect on areas of the nervous system like the brain the spine and the eyes. So we are putting the Cipro in the eye every 2 hours until we get the results back from the C&S. | |

| Here is a link to the website that makes the Soother Pluss. So far I am impressed with what I see after using it for less the 24 hours. Heal XThe eye itself is still very bad. But the skin around the eye, which is where I am using this cream, seems to be healing and Stormy isn't digging at it anymore. So far, I am really liking this stuff. | |

| Anita, Doodlebug had an eye infection. We were able to finally see a laceration on the eye itself. We had to have the lighting just right and then look at the eye from an angle to see it. If Stormy's been scratching, it could be the same situation. We used Gentamycin for the eye drops in our case. I'll have to look into the Heal X...new to me. I'll be sending good thoughts for you and Stormy. | |

| I'm sorry that I haven't updated. She is looking a little better but I feel sure that we lost that eye. I should have taken her back to the Vet today but I put it off until tomorrow because I have been a little under the weather. So we will see what the vet says tomorrow. | |

| Ok, Stormy seemed to be doing pretty good but when we took her off the antibiotics this flaired up overnight again and it was as bad if not worse than when I first took her to the vet. This is some bad, bad stuff. And the thing that I forgot to tell you is that she stinks. NO, not like a glider stinks. More like a peice of rotting meat stinks.
The Cultures showed four different bacteria in that eye. 1. Alcaligenes 2. Pseudomonas Sp. 3. Enterobacter 4. Staphylococcus
When I asked the Vet what made her stink because I had convinced myself that the eye was rotting inside her head and it was a really bad stank. She said it was the Pseudomonas, and if you've ever smelled Pseudomonas, you will never forget it. I agree. I've for sure never smelled anything lke that from any thing that wasn't already dead.
Thursday I took her back to the vet in Cocoa and then I took her to an Ophthalmologist in Maitland, then I took her back to the Vet in Cocoa so we were on the road all day. We now have meds that I've never heard of. She seems to be improving again, but it feels slower this time. Maybe it's just because we have been giving meds every two hours for what seems like an eternityl
Anyway the Ophthalmonogist prescribed Cefazolin drops for the eye, and vigamox drops for the eye, and baytril orally just in case there is anything systemic going on. And we are continueing the Medecam. The eye is ulcered so we won't be able to save it but we are now just trying to save Stormy.
When Stormy first got sick she was a sweet little girl. Now she cringes when I reach for her. And she fights me like a wild glider. How do those of you who do this all the time, do it? It is wearing on me that she hates me so much.
I have Stormy seperated from her colony but I take her out and let her socialize with them in the early evening. I sit her little cage right next to theirs and the can visit. And I have a wheel in her small cage. Those things seem to sooth her a little.
Stormy is down to 82 grams. That is 3 lower than when we started treatment. So I decided to give her more high calorie food to see if I can get some weight back on her. She should like that. I even gave her a little chunk of bread tonight.
If these antibiotics don't work, or if the infection comes back, the next step will probably be to have the eye removed at UF. I don't know if I will put her through that.

I have the SAME feelings with Meadow. Before she got her pouch infection she loved her mommy super lots...now as soon as she hears me coming she is crabbing and fighting me...

| Ohhhh you got some nasty little bugs running around in there!! That poor beautiful girl! Anita this is for you Honestly I see it this way....The eye NEEDS to go and until its gone all the antibotics etc are doing nothing but ease the symptoms a little and keep the infection from going systemic (which may still occur even with the antibiotic on board)...Once the eye is gone her little body wont be having to fight the source of the infection and the antibiotics should rid her body of anything lingering.. I am so sorry you are having to go through this! Hang in there sweetie!!! Please keep us updated!! | |

| I haven't used the meds you're using before. With certain infections, like this one, you must remove the source of the infection. Like I said, I know some vets will take a wait and see approach, but over time I've learned that it's best to be more proactive when dealing with infections. I understand how tough it is to make a decision about what's best for the glider in question. You and I talked about quality of life yesterday, and having gone through a similar problem with Doodlebug I can say I would go make the same decisions again. There's always a risk with anesthesia, but if the chances of good or improved quality of life after surgery are good, I will go for it. Doodlebug was about 10 years old when her eye is removed. She's doing fantastic. One question I have is about being referred to UF (University of Florida for you out of staters). Is there a special instance with Stormy that resulted in that referral or does your regular vet not do that type of surgery? My regular vet (now retired) did Doodlebug's surgery and it was pretty routine. I know that some doctors just don't do enough of "exotic" surgeries to want to do the more unique cases. I'm just trying to think of ways to minimize stress associated with treatment, and staying with a local vet and smaller office is usually easier for the glider than to be put into a larger more clinical setting.
As for her "hating" you, I know how tough it is. I go through this so much but it still bothers me. Yokio, the little guy who kept me from the roundup, was a little sweetie who know looks at me as if I have a horn growing between my eyes. I can tell you that they get over it. Sometimes it takes them a bit, but they don't hold a grudge. They're just like little kids who recognize when it's medicine time and try to avoid it or make you feel bad for being such a big meaner for wanting to get them well.
If it will make you feel any better you can call and crab at me. It may increase my intake of M&M's but I won't hold a grudge. I'm here if you need me.

| I Know it's better to lose one eye then lose both by it spreading.
I am praying for good news for you on Tuesday. Make sure to give Stormy so much attn she gets sick of you and yes she will get over it. Regulus likes me a lot more now that I'm not medicating him every 12 hours. I'm sure it's like kat said....kids hating to take medicine and not fully understanding that we are trying to help.

| Ok, I just realized that I messed up and I messed up pretty bad. It oral drug that I am giving Stormy is Baytril. Can someone change that in the post above. I wouldn't want someone to come by and read that in the future. I appreciate it very much.
Thanks everyone for your hust and well wishes. Stormy is doing a little better and something really wierd came out of her eye last night. It scared me to death because there for a split second, I thought her eyeball popped out. I she dove under the towel that I was using to hold her and then the thing was gone. I think it was just some kind of milky bubble. She is active and eating good and it takes 4 yogurt drops to get 2 eye drops in. LOL And the swelling has gone down a lot. We go to the Eye Dr tomorrow. Wish us luck.
