I woke up this morning and Gypsy has a lump on her lower jaw. I called my vet and he'll see her at 3 today. He doesn't know much so what is the usual treatment?

Okay, so I tell him to knock her out and xray? He isn't one I trust to drain an abscess if she has one. It is mobile. It isn't huge either. She's a bit of a chunk so I'm surprised we saw it. I read through most of the posts and they mainly are about others stories.

There's always a list of consult vets for this reason. If you don't trust your vet to do something as simple as this, you may want to think about looking around for another.

Yes, xrays should always be done to rule out tooth involvement.

Thank you. I'll let him xray but I guess I'll have to take her to Dr. Tristan if any surgery needs to be done. Could you possibly point me in the right direction for the list please? Never mind, I found it

That would place your glider at unnecessary risk, IMO. If you are going to have her anesthetized to do x-rays, might as well lance and drain the abscess at the same time instead of subjecting her to further anesthesia a few days later.

X-ray, lance, drain, flush, drain, flush and then don't stitch closed. It is something any vet can do. Antibiotics to treat the infection. If there is tooth root involvement, then pull the tooth.

It is wonderful that so many people share their stores for us all to learn from.

So, the vet said he is pretty sure its an abscess and put her on 0.05 Baytril 2 x's daily for 10 days. He got bit of course but yea, nature of the beast. He said it isn't attached to the jaw. We return in 7-10 days. If it hasn't resolved, he wants to knock her out and aspirate it with a needle to see whats inside. He came out with the medicine to show me how to draw it up and to where and once he got it drawn up, he's like, 'Do you want to go ahead and dose her now?' I said sure, go ahead. He looked at me at crazy. I told him " Awe come on Dr. Spillers, wheres your sense of adventure? Can't very well treat exotics if you are afraid of them'. I get bitten so much if just isn't funny anymore. I look like a diabetic who is always testing on my fingertips. Here is her abscess[url=Possible abscess? 010-9_zpsc9fea184]

He also wants to put her on a diet. Shes a big girl ain't she?[url=Possible abscess? 006-25_zps65e6b3c8]

Yes Val, you are right. I will tell him thats what I want if it doesn't resolve in the 7-10 days.

So he was "pretty sure" it was an abscess? Abscesses are common in all species and they can most times just feel of it and tell what it is. If x-rays were done, you'd know if it was FOR SURE an abscess. You were given information that if it was, in fact, an abscess, that it should be lanced and drained. So why didn't this happen? I guess I just don't understand why you ask what to do, what the advice is and what we suggest happen and then not do it?

Now, the abscess is draining so you have nothing to culture so you don't know whether or not antibiotic is even the right one to treat what's going on. Sorry, I just don't understand the logic.
