Stores here have seasonal items. For instance, we can no longer get kumquats here. But, when we could, the gliders here loved them. Be sure you are rolling them between your hands before cutting or they are just too bitter.

I will say, even though the gliders like them, *I* hate them. But, I hate most citrus fruits.

So, keep an eye on your local stores. You might find that some of these things pop up only for a short time at your stores (like they do here).

Unfortunately, no Whole Foods here, but Fresh Market usually carries some unusual stuff. I've found pricklypear there, so I'll keep checking for some of these.

Do you have any Asian markets around you. That is where I find a lot of my different foods.

Look closely at the kumquats, you may be surprised to find that they DID eat them - they look almost intact the following morning but they've sucked the juice out of the fruit.

Kevin...do you have a MOM's?

See another thing learned today " Be sure you are rolling them between your hands before cutting or they are just too bitter".

I never knew this. Beginning to feel like I live in a box.

I didn't know either. Last night we tried that and the kumquats were all over the floor this morning :-)

Yes, even if preparing kumquats just for people, you have to do this. Roll them in your hand firmly and an oil will be secreted. This brings the sweet juices out and makes it so they are not so bitter.

I see no reason they could not have Pluots.

They are a cross between Plums and Apricots.

I found sugar plums at the grocery store the other day, and let me tell you, those are beyond amazing! They call them sugar plums for a reason, very, very sweet. I have pictures, but have no idea how to post them, LOL

We have served Star Fruit, Leeches, figs, Chayote, Prickly Pear, butternut squash along with a lot of other squash varieties here in the last month. I am finding more items in our grocery store lately so keep your eyes out for fun things to feed.

They love Figs, Leeches,Prickly Pear and Star Fruit

Bobbie you just have to keep looking. I look at every inch of the fruit and veggies department when I go. If my husband comes he gets very frustrated asking how anyone could possibly spend 25 minutes looking at fruits and veggies. I almost missed the Leeches as most of these fruits are in a tiny corner of the shelf. They only have them at certain times of the year. The Leeches were there for maybe 4 days then poof gone.

I will look closer, Brenda!

Holly....are you talking about the prickly pear? If so, I just slice, trim off the peel, and give them the pieces as chunks or slices.

Has anyone fed chestnuts? A friend brought me some, and I have roasted 3 batches today. They have a surprising texture and taste - kinda like sweet potato! I like them! I just wondered if anyone has tried them with their gliders. I think I am going to make chocolate chestnut cupcakes tomorrow!

While camping this weekend I found Dragon Fruit at Walmart. I have not seen this around here before. So keep your eyes open you just never know what will pop up!

I am not sure on the Chestnuts sorry.

Can they have aloe leaves and do they like them? If this is redundant, I apologise...

About the cactus leaf, I removed/cut off the spines and cut it up and fed like that. They loved it. :)
