Infection - Prolapsed 3rd eyelid Empty
PostSubject: Infection - Prolapsed 3rd eyelid   Infection - Prolapsed 3rd eyelid Icon_minitimeWed Apr 03, 2013 11:15 am

I checked on Betty Sue this morning and this is what I saw. I didn't notice anything the day before so this came up within 24hrs.

Infection - Prolapsed 3rd eyelid Eye_040313-L

I just returned from the vet where he did a thorough exam of the eye and an xray. No cultures were taken.
The vet thinks this is inflammation of the 3rd eyelid/gland and possible infection although there are no signs of conjunctivitis. The xray looked okay - no sign of tooth/bone involvement.

He put her an a broad spectrum antibiotic (Orbax) 1x/day; Ciprofloxin Eye drop 4-5x/day; and diclofenac drop (for inflammation) 2-3x/day.

Hopefully, this will heal her up quickly. I will follow-up with the vet in 5 days and if there's no improvement or it gets worse he may consider steroid drops to reduce the inflammation.

Anyone else have experience with this?

Kev - call Val. Seems to me she has dealt with this one or more times.

Thanks Aimee, I'll give her a call.

The swelling was more more protuberant the following morning covering up over 3/4 of the eye. I wasn't able to start the diclofenac drops until yesterday afternoon because the pharmacy had to order them. We went back the vet yesterday afternoon and he added metacam to her meds, but wants me to be careful she doesn't ingest the diclofenac drops because combined with the metacam could damage her liver. He asked me to also use an artificial tears drop to keep the eye moist to avoid corneal ulcers in between the cipro and diclofenac drops.

I am taking her to work with me so that I can put drops of one sort or another about every hour or two. Luckily the oral antibiotic is only once daily.

I've seen this a few times and each time seemed to have a different cause. LOL

In any case, sounds like you have a firm treatment plan and you will likely see a difference within a week or so. Infection - Prolapsed 3rd eyelid 288672

I have no idea what may have caused this either. Infection - Prolapsed 3rd eyelid 824604

I just snapped this photo. This is the third day since it showed up.

Betty Sue is one of 4 I received from a voluntary surrender to animal control. One of the 4 had a bad tail injury requiring amputation and also had what appeared to be this same eye problem. She passed away the day after I brought her home from the vet. My vet doesn't think this is a genetic problem, but it's strange that this same issue has shown up in 2 gliders from that group. scratch

This is a pic of Billy Jean the day before she passed:

Poor baby - Val, is there even a way to know a firm cause of these issues?

There hasn't been much change. Here is a pic taken yesterday:

Infection - Prolapsed 3rd eyelid Eye_040813_B-M

The Vet spoke with an ophthalmologist yesterday and he is doing some more research since it hasn't reduced in size much. He is thinking about doing a biopsy to rule out a tumor if it's not better in the next couple of days. He has mentioned the possibility of removing the third eyelid. However, I am planning to give the current treatment more time before jumping to biopsy/surgery.

Val, has Dr. Walsh dealt with this before? If so, I'd like to have my vet consult with him.

Thanks,
Kevin

Yes he has.
Are they sure, sure there was no bone involvement?

If you read up on Jackie Chan's similar issue, you will find that it was about 9 days before there was much improvement. Those eye issues sometimes take a bit to show us that they are healing.

Thanks Val, I will definitely wait through this weekend before considering anything invasive. They took a number of views via xray and they looked okay, but there's always the possibility something could be missed or may have been too early to show.

I'm so tired of posting sad pictures of this sweet girl. Infection - Prolapsed 3rd eyelid 903968

She's probably the sweetest glider I have in the house. She was just chattering away when I took these pictures today. flower

What a sweet girl, Kevin, you're doing a great job with her. As Val said above, it sometimes takes several days so hopefully she'll be on the mend soon. Did your vet consult with Dr. Walsh?

Thanks Aimee, and yes, she is a very sweet girl. She hasn't fussed once during all of this. My vet did not contact Dr. Walsh. I wanted to give the meds more time based on Val's advice before considering invasive treatment (biopsy or surgery to remove the lid). And I think that was a very good decision, fingers crossed, because I think the eye is looking better. It is not as red and swollen as it was. Val said she saw no improvement until day nine and I think it was the 9th or 10th day that I felt I was seeing some mild improvement. I am cautiously optimistic that it will continue to improve. We have a follow-up appointment with the vet on Thursday. Here's the lovely lady this morning. She got rewarded with some mealies after her photo shoot and eyedrops.

Betty Sue's eye looks even better today.
We went to the vet this morning for a follow-up and she has developed a corneal ulcer which he said looked like it was due to exposure from being unable to close her eye.

So we are starting her on a triple-antibiotic ointment 4x/day, Metacam every other day, and supplementing Blink natural tears drops to try to keep her eye lubricated. He said corneal ulcers typically heal pretty quickly. We go back for a follow-up appointment next week.

Thank you so much for keeping us updated. I haven't been posting on here since I really don't have anything helpful to add or ask, but I have been reading constantly. She is such a pretty girl and so obviously well loved and taken care of by you. I am hoping she will make a full recovery soon and this story will be a wonderful tool to assist any who may find themselves in this situation in the future. Thank you! :)

Thanks Brenda. My hope is that my experience with this may help others that encounter similar issues. For instance, if Val hadn't told me it took 9-days to see any improvement when Jackie Chan had a similar issue I probably would have gone ahead with a biopsy and possible surgery when really I just needed to be patient and let the meds do their work. I am VERY thankful for Val and all of you who step up to share their experiences. It DOES make a difference!

If the eye relapses now that we've stopped the anti-inflammatory drops the next step will be to take her to the vet school at Virginia Tech to see an ophthalmologist. I am optimistic that we're through the worst though - the eye looks 100% better, and that next week this will all be over.

We just returned from our follow-up visit at the vet.
I am very happy to report that the ulcer has healed and only a small amount of scarring remains which the vet says may resolve completely over time.
He said that the 3rd eyelid may remain visible in the corner of her eye, but not to be concerned unless it becomes inflamed or swollen again.

So now I just need to find Betty Sue and her cagemate, Bella, a forever home!

I'm so happy this turned out well. Thanks to everyone for following along. Infection - Prolapsed 3rd eyelid 1956175960
