Please feel free to move this as it may not be in the right place.
Why are my gliders tails thinning...is it a vitamin deficiency? Is it age? Any thoughts?

Cora
Can you please tell us more?
How old are these gliders? Is it ALL of your gliders? Just the males? Just the females?
What diet do you feed? Are you real strict with it, or do you make allowances and cheat every now and then?
When did you first start to notice this?
Are these breeding gliders or pet gliders or both?

different ages from 2 to 6.
Its Bear (5 years OOP, neutered at 4), Nick (2 years OOP) unneutered (think his was stress from losing Holly and being alone), and a couple others. Jasmines(nonbreeding) tail was almost bald when she died but was thinning when she came. She was here for 2 years. Her mate Moby died before her but had a full tail and was an overall healthy looking glider. Bear and Jasmine was not on any particular diet until they came here. I feed HPW(made Alicias way). I give ensure occ. I dunno I feed a lot of dif fruits and veggies.

I did not have time to research all of this, but I wanted to make sure that you knew that it is being thought of. So, here are some things that you might want to research.

Since it is just fur loss on the tails, and this is in more than one of your gliders, then it does lead me to believe that it is environmental or medical. If they were all related, I would consider a genetic link as well, but from your description, I assume that they are not all related.

So, I was giving thought to what might cause hair loss in other species. Off the top of my head, here are a few things:

* Infection - either bacterial, parasite or mites
* Allergic dermatitis - also check humidity levels in your home, as dry skin can also cause hair loss
* hypothyroidism
* pattern alopecia - I doubt it is this, but throwing it out there for research anyway
* Diabetes
* An adrenal response can cause dermatitis, resulting in hair loss. I would have to research specifics of this, but I know it can happen in dogs.
* In Cocker Spaniels (and maybe other species???) a vitamin A deficiency can cause hair thinning/loss
* In Guinea Pigs, a vitamin C deficiency can cause hair loss. I know that my Cheddar had thin fur all over his body when he was diagnosed with Scurvy.

Those are just a few of my thoughts. At least it is some things to get you thinking and researching. I would say, though, that a vet visit is in order. If everything checks out well, then you have to start looking at environment and habits to see if they are repeatedly irritating or rubbing the tail against something. It could also be a habitual overgrooming. I have one glider that overgrooms as a habit. He has for years.

Please be sure to let us know if you find anything, if you have other thoughts or if anything changes.

These gliders are seen by my vet. He doesn't know. Just throwing it out there. Vitamin A deficiency, hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Might ask him what he thinks about that. Any other ideas?
he says maybe gliders are susceptible to alopecia. Heck i dunno :)

You left an extra a up there girlfriend!!! I will try to be more careful. Seems the older I get the less I can remember to spell!!! I dont know how to use spellcheck, sad huh???
OK I keep looking at those names up there and it has got to be stress. Bears tail starting thinning after I seperated his quad for mating wound issues. I got him and his 4 year old pouch mate neutered and placed them with a mother and daughter that had been here for 3 or 4 months. It did not work out because of repeated mating wounds on both girls. So They are all stress tail groomers? I guess some overgroom their heads and others their tails...maybe we should be giving them all small doses of glider valium!!!

Some days I wish *I* had a valium!

I know that list is not all inclusive. It was just what I could think of at the moment.

Well, you have a direction to go now. Please keep us posted.

Hey Cora - did you ever get any answers or direction here? How are your gliders doing? Is there any change in the skin itself, or is it just hair thinning?

No change, no answers, as with most glider issues all a bunch of question marks and not many answers, or conflicting answers. But thanks for asking!
