The SUGAR Group has collected data on over 300 gliders thus far. We will continue collecting this same data via our initial survey for one more year (2010) and then will retire this survey for 5+ years. We will plan to submit this same report next year and see how numbers change as the number of gliders are represented.

Here is some information we thought you might find interesting. All data is based upon the surveys we have collected thus far.
__________________________________________________________

Of the data collected, 51% represented male gliders.
65% of those males are neutered.

The average weight of an adult glider = 107 grams

The vast majority of gliders represented (83%) were between the ages of 2-5 years.

Of gliders represented:
40% were purchased from breeders
11% were born in the respondent’s home
17% were rescues
32% were rehomed.

78% of respondents reported using a “proven” or well-known diet plan
The most widely used diet was HPW (48.6%)
65 different diets were reported

Average number of gliders in each home = 6

10.4% of joeys reported were cannibalized, pulled, or otherwise did not survive

Primary reason that rescues are surrendered or seized is “the owner could no longer provide appropriate care” (60.5%)

41% of rescues coming into rescue homes are sick or injured upon arrival.
88% of those that arrive sick or injured survived (given treatment in the rescue home.)

some yes, some no. Some are just different diets (like mine and Dee's) that aren't as easy to follow for others and have not been "studied." People feed a wide variety of things to their gliders. You would be surprised.

I'm surprised at over 300 people, the average number of gliders per hh is 6! Wait...I have 6. LOL I guess it seems like most people only have a pair on a lot of the boards.

Those are cool numbers! I'm fascinated by statistics.

I'm surprised more of the males aren't neutered.

I'm also thrilled with the number of sick/injured rescues who come into homes and are treated and survive. Good statistic!

I guess I'm one of those that is pushing the curve, Kylah. I have 13! Wait ... no ... 3 of the rescues were returned to me today .... so I have 16!

I'm really happy that the SUGAR Group was able to collect so much useful information, good job guys! I know I tried to contribute. That's really fascinating, I can't wait to see what changes and what stays the same in 5 years.
