PostSubject: Dried or "Crunchy" Ears?   Fri Jul 01, 2011 9:59 pm

I am not seeing another post about ears, so please direct me to it if there is one. I'm seeing this thread on GG and just wondering if anyone has any opinions on what this is from? I have seen this one other time and the owner thought it was from heat in her home. This doesn't seem to be the issue in this case...or I guess it could be. I really have no idea.

I've seen posts before, and I think Val has one here. I believe it is usually mites, but am not 100% sure on that. I've not experienced it. I'd wait and see what Val, or someone else with experience has to say.

Will do. Someone did mention mites but I haven't checked her other threads to see if she's had a vet check yet.

I would suggest that she have a vet check for mites, fungal infection and/or bacterial infection.
Any of those could cause this. Fungal infection being the least likely candidate.

A glider's ears are vascular (have blood flow), so there is the possibility of this being the only sign of a much greater issue. It would be a shame if she has not gotten to the vet.

She should also put some QuickDerm on them. :)

I'll go respond there shortly.

I saw that she said it can be caused by stress. Really? How can that be possible?

My honest opinion: this is the diagnosis of an unexperienced vet. Surely, if this were a result of stress, we would have seen it over and over in some of our gliders with high anxiety.

She states that she was given an antibiotic and that it then stopped spreading. That indicates that it was, in fact, a bacterial infection. Antibiotics are not prescribed to treat stress.

That is exactly what I was thinking but she obviously thinks this vet is awesome. I also won't ever argue a vet's advice on a forum since I'm very obviously not one, but I am smart enough to know when something makes sense and something doesn't. I hope she asks them.

Ditto. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to know that stress does not spread throughout the outside of the body and cause decay.
I hope she finds a better vet.

I know stress can limit the body's immunity which, in turn, increases the severity of illnesses, but I don't think I've ever heard it be the cause of a physical illness.

Mines right ear just started showing a crunchy area, I was wondering what it was, she has a visit with the vet today, they are putting her on two different antibiotics as her cultures came back yesterday. Hopefully it will clear it up.

Not sure if I should start another thread, because her ear isn't dry or "crunchy". I am probably being a worry wart as she has been the vet's, got a clear fecal and thorough exam. Her ear outer looks curved kinda? The other ear isn't like that. I am gonna shower and change and check with the other gliders. I got a picture but It's a cheap call, so bad.

I can't really get the pics to show it correctly. It looks different, but not worse. I don't consider it an emergency but it bugs me. And I have to find something to worry over besides diet:

Above was from my cell phone. 5/13/12
In this picture it is showing her GOOD/NORMAL ear, but it still shows a spot on her BAD one:

Zoey's ear got worse. I took her to the vet an it's a pretty obvious tear. She said it will, obviously not grow back. I asked about quickderm and am going to put that on her. I was not impressed with the vet today, but this was because she changed her opinion on diets.
